Random Thoughts After Reading the new Edition of Barrons

1) VIX is now trending more or less sideways. This is a change from its almost relentless downtrend that has been in place since March. Do not take this as being bearish however. VIX went sideways from December to March before breaking lower.

2) On the foreign markets page I do not see any information on the Shanghai exchange. Of course I may be looking in the wrong place. Information on the Shanghai Exchange might be in the casino section.

3) From October of last year until March of this year NYSE cumulative Breadth underperformed the Dow Jones (see the chart on page M18). Since March, breadth has outperformed the Dow Jones. I would expect the current uptrend to continue as long as breadth continues to outperform the Dow.

4) Barrons quotes Larry McMillan as saying that options volume is surging. Thursday was the second most active day in listed option history. McMillan also pointed out that 360 stocks traded at least twice their normal volume, with at least 42 of those having technically strong charts. Typically, only two or three a day meet these criteria.

Add all this up and you get some support for a continued uptrend, unless you are trading the Shanghai Market. If you are, all bets are off (and good luck!).
